Student politics at the University

  • Moderat Gruppe labels itself the only non-socialist alternative among the «parties» or groups in the Student Parliament.
  • The Student Parliament is the highest student authority at UiO. The Parliament presents student matters before UiO.
  • This year’s Student Parliament Election, where students cast their votes, is scheduled to take place by the end of March/beginning of April.
  • Here are your voting alternatives: Moderat Gruppe, Sosialdemokratene, Venstrealliansen, Fakultetslistene, Grøn Liste and Morbus Medicus. (Karl Johans-lista will not be running this year).
  • Leading up to the Election, Universitas will be presenting the various manifestos of the groups.

– To obtain more resources to put into research and to improve academic quality, UiO needs to co-operate more closely with the private sector and the business community. The objective has to be ten per cent external financing within 2010. Currently, only one per cent comes from the business community, Marianne Torp, political vice executive of MG, says.

And with these election promises, the race for student votes in this spring’s Student Parliament Election is on. It is scheduled to take place by the end of March/beginning of April.

Have to think new

– The University needs to put itself out there and think new, Kjartan Allmenning, leader of MG, says.

Moderat gruppe thinks that a closer co-operation on research with the private sector and enterprises will attract donations and means of funding to UiO from the business community.

– Through increased co-operation between the University and other institutions, UiO is able to front a campaign to increase research activities in the capitol area. From a long-term perspective, this will comply with UiO`s own objective of becoming one of the best universities in Europe, Allmenning says, who thinks that UiO has to be more than just a pillar of academic education:

– UiO also needs to help students in getting contacts and building networks for the future during their studies.

– Wrong focus

Egil Heinert, second chair of Sosialdemokratene, thinks that MG is trying to dodge earlier controversial statements.

– This is clearly an attempt from MG to displace focus following the extreme attention that statements regarding the tuition fees got. These were made by MG`s Kristian Meisingset, Heinert says.

He is sceptical to the idea of the business community providing research funding for UiO.

– It is incredibly important that UiO is in charge of the allocation of funds, and that the business community does not get the chance to control research. If not, we will have a situation where funds are allocated unfairly, and where Science and Mathematics and Medicine will be rewarded, whereas others will receive close to nothing, Heinert says.
