Code of Behaviour for Loners on St. Valentine`s Day
It is common to believe that the spookiest day of the year is Halloween. However, some would argue that it is definitely the 14th of February.
So why does Valentine`s Day scare single people so badly? I guess, it is not only about kissing teenagers in parks and tones of heart-shaped chocolates and pink teddies at the stores. On that day one who is not dating anyone could feel so much pressure from the society.
Usually, it is only your mum who asks you at every family celebration why you are still single, but on St. Valentine`s Day it seems like the whole world is waiting for an answer to this question. In order not to associate yourself with outsiders and survive that day with a sense of dignity despite certain prejudice, get familiar with mandatory rules on how to behave on the upcoming 14th of February.
#1 Do not call your ex!
On St. Valentine`s Day your mind is not 100% clear because of all the romantic vibes, and feeling lonely should not be a reason to call someone who is not a part of your life anymore. Wait a couple of days and see if you still can`t stop thinking about that person. For security reasons and in order not to yield to temptation it could be wiser to give your phone into the custody of your best friend (this tip is approved by the International Academy of ThinkTwiceBeforeYourExBreaksYourHeartAgain).
#2 Love yourself
Being single should not prevent you from celebrating St. Valentine`s Day. Why to ignore this holiday and sarcastically tell people that you don`t need a soulmate because you don`t have a soul, when you can actually enjoy it? If the 14th of February is all about love, then it`s a perfect time to take care of the most precious you have in your life – yourself. Listen to your inner voice and be attentive to your dreams and desires. Start your day with a portion of good music. Spoil yourself with some delicious food – love fades, pizza stays forever. Visiting a massage studio, going to a spa, attending a new art exhibition or taking a long, relaxing walk– all these activities represent another way of saying “I love you” to yourself. You deserve that! Have you already been to the new MUNCH museum? If not, then maybe our [review](ii) will inspire you to open your heart to art on St. Valentine`s Day?

#3 Search for some “single hearts” party downtown
If you are in a mood for hanging out among people, whose hearts aren`t pierced with Cupid`s arrow, then you should check out what the nightlife of your city can offer you. Norwegian bars and clubs always organize thematic parties, and they would never miss a chance to throw a party dedicated to St. Valentine`s Day. It could be a great opportunity to dance, get acquainted with new people and have much fun.
#4 Don`t to go on a blind date just because you`re bored/sad
Some people become extremely desperate before St. Valentine`s Day and agree to meet someone exclusively because they can`t stand being alone on that day. Are you one of them? I hope not. Anyways don’t hurry to say “yes” when your friends suggest that you should give it a try. A blind date could be an interesting experience, and there`s always a chance that you could meet the love of your life. However, I want you to remember that forcing yourself to do something just because of groundless, contrived fears is one of the most serious crimes against your individuality and inner freedom according to the present Code. Life is a roller-coaster, it is full of amazing surprises, and you never know what to expect from it. Loretta Young once said, “Love isn`t something you find. Love is something that finds you.” Maybe not today, not tomorrow, but it will definitely happen. You just need to believe!
#5 No soap
Staying at home imposes certain limitations on what you can do. Watching a typical sentimental melodrama would be a bad option for a lonely evening on St. Valentine`s Day. The only tears that should run down your cheeks are tears of laughter. That is why you should let yourself get distracted by a comedy movie that would make you laugh out loud and lift your spirits. In order not to waste your time searching for a perfect film or going to the grocery store for snacks, it is recommended to get prepared a couple of days before St. Valentine`s Day.
#6 Go eeeeeeeasy on the booze, baby
I hope Adele won`t mind me amending her lyrics to emphasize that you shouldn`t drink too much on St. Valentine`s Day, since this road will lead you only to a terrible headache the next morning and feeling of emptiness (for instance, your bank card will be empty, as long as alcohol in Norway costs an arm and a leg). That`s not worth it!
#7 Yes, it is still prohibited to call/text/organize Zoom meetings/send carrier pigeons/stand with posters “Baby come back!” and boom box like in the 90-s movies under your ex`s window
