Culture Calendar Sept. 22-24
You could just eat for two days, but if you have other interests we've got you covered.
It hurts to say, but summer is really over. Still, there might be a few days left to be outside without long underwear. This weekend try taking a short walk outside in the fresh fall air, then try some of the events Oslo has to offer.
Eating is always a good way to start the weekend. Starting Friday morning, Matstreif food festival begins, and Rådhusplassen will be filled with local food and drink from all over Norway. If you’re skeptical, believe me: this will be top-notch, with Norwegian food-producers and food-lovers really showing what they’ve got.
You don’t have to speak Norwegian to appreciate Norwegian music, especially the surprisingly great hip hop and rap scene here. On Friday, Parkteatret will host Myra, a rapper from Bergen whose music career is barely a year old, but seems to be coming up fast. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy her concert at such an intimate venue.
There are a plethora of Saturday options, because Matstreif will still be on, and Open House Oslo begins. For two days, a number of buildings around Oslo will be open to the public, including spots that are usually inaccessible. Have you ever wanted to see the inside of NRK? Do you want to explore the king’s former garden? Any interest in seeing UiO’s observatory? This is your chance!
Saturday night you can kick back with a movie – for free, outside. The weather currently says it will be dry, and around 10 degrees, so bundle up and watch «La La Land» at Rådhusplassen.
Personally, I advise taking it easy on a Sunday, but if you insist on going out, wander by Java’s yard sale. There will be all kinds of coffee-related equipment available on sale, for those of us who take our coffee (a little too) seriously. Maybe you’ll find something to make your Monday morning a bit more enjoyable.
