It’s the last weekend before Halloween, and that means fun and frights all weekend. If you hate Halloween, there are a few options for you too.
From Thursday to Sunday you can visit the haunted house at Chateau Neuf. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will have the scariest version. Saturday and Sunday also have a slightly less scary option, recommended for anyone over 6 years old (and me).
Friday is all about beer and tacos. Head to Uglebo student pub for the former, where they’ll have a Halloween-themed night. For the latter you’ll have to get to Vippa downtown, but it will be worth it: Super Taco Friday sounds like the ultimate «fredags taco,» with a Dia de Los Muertos theme.
What is October without a dose of scary movies? The Deichmanske Library in Grünerløkka will be showing an «alternative scary film» on Saturday: «Women Who Kill» is about two women who have a true-crime podcast, and what happens when one begins dating a beautiful femme fatale – who might actually be a murderer. There is a five minute introduction in Norwegian, but the movie is in English; afterwards there will be a video of a Q&A with the director in English.
Saturdays are really for dancing though, and thankfully this month’s Oslo Soul Experience is on Saturday, 22:00 to 3:30. The self-described «true underground soul club of Oslo» always has excellent DJs and good vibes; it’s impossible not to dance when you hear good soul music.
Post-dancing (or pre-dancing, depending on how late you plan on staying out), you could take a short walk from Leiligheten to Way Down South, where they’re serving fried chicken and cocktails, 22:00 to 3:00. As an American, I can confirm: this fried chicken is the real thing. After a night out, I can only imagine how great it would taste.
Ok, I get it though, you’re sick of Halloween and anything related to it. Maybe you’re just in a bad mood because it’s gloomy, rainy and cold outside? A hot bowl of soup might be just what you need. On Sunday, Hrímnir Ramen will be holding a pop-up event at Restaurant Sentralen. Both the pop-up and ramen trends might seem a little out of control, and even passé at this point, but Hrímnir serves up a twist: Nordic ramen featuring ingredients like seaweed and foraged mushrooms.
Back to Halloween though: I couldn’t leave you hanging without plans for Tuesday. On the spookiest night of the year you can get up to all kinds of mischief, but why not kick off your night with a classic vampire movie? Cinema Neuf is showing «Nosferatu». This 1922 silent film has a strange history behind it, having been produced by an actual occultist, and with almost every copy being destroyed at one point. Thankfully it survived, and the showing on Halloween will feature live music by jazz drummer Axel Skalstad. I can’t think of a more appropriate or esoteric way to spend the evening.
