Culture Calendar Jan. 25-28
This weekend is full of bad advice (impulsive tattoo anyone?), good music, and of course art (though whether it’s good or bad is up to you).
This week, Rockefeller continues a very good run of free pre-screenings. On Thursday you can see «The Florida Project,» which promises to be excellent and rightfully acclaimed.
Or you can go to Astrup Fearnley’s art night dedicated to the new Cindy Sherman exhibition from the museum collection. Sherman is known for her provocative photos, often focusing on gender roles. Party with a drink in hand while you ponder the art.
The would-be arbiters of culture have spoken, and this year’s Academy Award nominations are out. This writer doesn’t put much stock in the Oscar’s, but admits to finding a certain satisfaction in ticking off the year’s nominees and being able to talk about them knowledgably. If you’re also in need of something to talk about, go see Call Me by Your Name, which has garnered four nominations, including Best Picture. It will heal your heart and illuminate what is good in life. Opening this Friday.
Or if you’re in the mood for a concert this Friday, don’t miss out on Mikhael Paskalev at U1 bar at UiO. He’s an important and talented figure on the Oslo music scene, and not to be missed – especially for the student-friendly price of 100 NOK.
Saturday is as good a day as any for impulsive decisions that you definitely (probably?) won’t regret, right? If you agree, Inked Up Oslo is holding a Flash Day, when they’ll be selling original tattoo designs for cheap. If winter has you feeling dead inside, get a hit of adrenaline and a cool tattoo. Maybe then you’ll feel a little more alive.
For a relaxed Sunday you could visit the new group exhibition «Not Your Average Bby Girl,» a collaboration between artists which aims to «promote diversity in the arts» as well as create a space for femme and queer artists. Why not check it out, and then have a chilled-out coffee with friends in Tøyen? Perfect Sunday: achieved.
