Cry me a river, strikebreakers

Norwegian students who are attending classes during the strike in Britain need to reconsider their choice to study abroad.

Strikes and protests are a sure sign of spring in Britain. A majority of professors and teachers in many of the biggest education institutions there have decided to strike for the next four weeks. [If the University and College Union (UCU) and Universities UK (UUK) can’t come to a decision, the strike could last until summer.](1)

It’s unfortunate to miss out on lectures and exams, especially when as a Norwegian student in Britain you’re paying up to 200,000 NOK per year in tuition. But Norwegian students are not the center of the universe(ity). Students who can’t accept the risks associated with studying abroad should stay in Norway.

While you’re sulking because your study abroad didn’t turn out to be a bed of roses, the pensions and salaries of 42,000 employees are being cut.

Since 2009, wages for professors and teachers in British universities have fallen 16 percent. Now, proposals could cut pensions by 40 percent, or up to 100,000 NOK per year. If you are a student at one of the 61 universities on strike, you should stay home during the strike. Better yet, take to the streets and support UCU.

Over the almost four years I have lived and studied in England, I went to strikes, sent letters to the university administration, and joined some of the biggest demonstrations in England. This strike could have huge consequences for my master’s degree, but it’s a price worth paying. This fight is bigger than you and me.

Higher education in Britain is changing, and international students must contribute by pressuring the university administration and British politicians. In particular, master’s students and PhD candidates can have greater influence, since we make up a significant portion of the student population.

Norwegian students are so lucky to receive state-sponsored student loans and stipends. Most of us get a job when we are done studying. Show you’re more than a whining, pampered baby. Support UCU and take a few days off from school.
