Fairytales, Oktoberfest or caffeine kicks? Take your pick.

Start the weekend early with some autumn-y outdoor cinema Thursday night. «Askeladden – i Dovregubbens Hall» (Askeladden in the Hall of the Mountain King) premieres this weekend, and it is probably the most Norwegian film ever released. Based on a well-known fairytale, it tells the story of a poor farmer's son, Askeladden, who goes off to fight trolls and court a sassy princess. There aren't English subtitles, but if you're up for a bit of language practice, breathtaking nature shots, and some brilliant Grieg music, get yourself to the free screening at Tøyen.

When Friday finally arrives, the annual Oktoberfest is kicking off at Chateau Neuf. There will be endless beer and loads of screaming Norwegians in fake lederhosen getting even more drunk than usual. You can either avoid it like the plague, or embrace the craziness with open arms. Your call.

If you're up for a calmer Friday night, one of Norway's best jazz vocalists Solveig Slettahjell is playing at Nasjonal Jazzscene. A very decent way to de-stress after a busy week.

Come Saturday, there will be a farmer's market at Birkelunden with local and organic food. Expensive, yes, but high-quality – and of course lots of samples, which, as we all know, is the best part.

If you're a caffeine lover, Saturday sees Oslo's very own coffee festival happening: Kaffikaze. Norwegian coffee is known for its quality, so trot along to Vulkan and check out if it's true. Rumour has it there will be coffee beer and coffee cocktails, among other things.

Still high on caffeine? In the mood for a colourful, synth-filled and straight up wild Saturday night? A double concert with noise rock band Deathcrush and electropoppers KUUK at Revolver might be the answer.

If you're feeling a bit more sophisticated, The National Ballet premieres their brand new contemporary piece Hedda Gabler, based on Ibsen's controversial play. Student prices are actually quite decent. Even if you're not too keen on ballet, a trip to the Opera is worth it just to gawk at the architecture; an English guided tour takes place at 12 noon.

On Sunday, the brilliant weekly market at Blå is your best option. Stroll along the Aker river, get some nibbles and brace yourself for the upcoming week.

If you're not too tired come evening, pop off to Kulturhuset to catch indie pop artist Josefin Winther's release concert. It promises to be absolutely beautiful.
