Wants to single out women

Sosialdemokratene, a political group of social democrats, is more than willing to resort to radical gender quotas in order to get more women into the University.

Gender quotas

  • Radical gender quotas: The person hired is a qualified applicant from the underrepresented gender group, even though there are more qualified applicants among the overrepresented.
  • Moderate gender quotas: The person hired is the person from the underrepresented gender group in the event that two applicants are more or less equally qualified.

Student politics at UiO

  • The party or the political group Sosialdemokratene labels its policies social democratic and compares itself to Arbeiderpartiet.
  • The Student Parliament is the highest student authority at UiO. The Parliament presents student matters before UiO.
  • This year’s Student Parliament Election, where students cast their votes, is scheduled to take place by the end of March/beginning of April.
  • Here are your voting alternatives: Moderat Gruppe, Sosialdemokratene, Venstrealliansen, Fakultetslistene, Grøn Liste and Morbus Medicus. (Karl Johans-lista will not be running this year).
  • Leading up to the Election, Universitas will be presenting the various manifestos of the groups.

– We have to do something about the uneven gender balance of the scientific staff. And we feel that radical gender quotas might be proper means, Egil Heinert, second chair of Sosialdemokratene (SD) says.

With that, the social democratic group launches its candidacy in the Student Parliament Election. SD characterises itself as a group that can be comparable to Arbeiderpartiet (the Norwegian Labour Party), which is also typical of the management of the group.

– However, we are indeed politically independent, Heinert declares, and then he fires away:

– To push things to extremes, it is still a fact that men have less responsibility in raising children, which means that female scientists have time-related disadvantages. One way to make amends would be to create more cheap kindergarten availability at UiO.

Heinert explains that one of SD’s core issues for the following year will be equal opportunities of education and prosperous welfare arrangements for students.

– Old-fashioned

Moderat Gruppe (MG), a political right-wing group, one of SD’s political opponents, thinks that SD’s statements are both reactionary and old-fashioned.

– Radical gender quotas will amount to nothing, Marianne Torp, political leader of MG, says.

– UiO needs to look into recruitment procedures rather than taking on potentially incompetent candidates. UiO must rather look into why there is such an uneven balance, she says.
