Passed/Failed

Publisert

The University\'s rector, Arild Underdal, has suggested that those subjects in which students receive mostly As and Bs, should simply award pass/fail marks rather than the newly introduced A to E scale. The Faculty of Medicine has used a simple pass/fail system for several years, and has concluded that this has been positive with regard to reducing pressure towards achieving high grades. Per Brodal, Dean at the Faculty of Medicine, considers the simplified system appropriate, as most of the grade scale would not have been used in any case. Magnus Worren, Officer for Education and Teaching at the Student Parliament is concerned that a simple pass/fail system would make it more difficult for students applying to study abroad, as the simplified grades would not reveal whether the student in question was academically brilliant or simply average.

Grant Committees

Fewer students are likely to receive grants in future, due to a move by the Faculty of Medicine to pay researchers on grant committees. Director at the Faculty of Medicine, Bjørn Hol, points out that it is getting more and more difficult to find qualified members for the approximately 60 grant committees. Although there is no real danger of grants being withheld as yet, this could potentially lead to no grants being awarded in future.
