Undermining Democracy

More than a hundred students and staff from the Faculty of History and Philosophy demonstrated outside the University of Oslo’s board meeting on Tuesday. The demonstrators were demanding a continuation of the existing system, under which institute directors and the universities’ rectors are elected. The board decided that while rectors will be elected in future also, institute leaders will be appointed. Marte Nilsen, representing Attac Blindern describes the process leading up to the decision threatens university democracy and is “an attempt at introducing a dictatorship with short notice.”

Unworried

According to a recent study done on behalf of Postbanken bank, one in four students does not expect to find a job immediately after completing his or her studies; one in five has no idea of the sort of salary they can expect, and 40% of students reflect rarely or never on their student loan and the fact that it must be redeemed. Students at the School of Management BI are the most optimistic with regard to finding work, and the most informed on their future salaries. The staff at the Student Loan Office are aware that many recent graduates have problems paying their instalments. 36% of graduates apply for postponements in their first year following University.
